A very good eco-friendly friend of mine from the east coast informed me about California’s ‘Bag Ban Bill’ which will get the good ol’ yey or ney at the end of August. Officially known as AB 1998, the bill will eliminate the use of plastic bags at grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores. This is fantastic. Reusable bags, here we come! Plastic has never been very stylish anyways. Don’t even get me started on how unfashionable they are for the environment. Okay, I’ll get started. Just TWO facts that will WOW your pants off:

  • Estimates by the BBC and CNN claim that anywhere from .5% to 3% of all bags winds up recycled.
  • Approximately 500 nautical miles off the California coast sits a growing “plastic island” a gargantuan patch of floating plastic trash held together by currents stretching across the northern Pacific almost as far as Japan. This “plastic island” is made up of about 7 billion pounds of plastic garbage, and measures about twice the size of Texas.

We don’t need plastic bags in our lives. We need to take responsibility! What takes 1 minute and gives certified superhero status?

Call & Support the Bill All you have to say is “I am a member of your district and I urge you to support AB 1998, the bill to ban plastic carryout bags in California.”

Email the CA state senate! The body of the email is pre-written. Talk about easy breezy.
